First Finders?

From: pairomedicsandtheivs (squad51@earthlink.net) | Date: 2002-08-08 16:55:18 UTC
Attention Virginia Letterboxers!! In light of the recent discussions
that had occured over first finder bragging rights our family has
decided to include a "First Finders Certificate" in our next box, due
out soon. We're aware this might be a bit controversial but we feel
this might encourage folks to come out and go 'boxing. Who knows,
maybe first finder certificates will catch on (hint).

There's an example of our certificate at the message boards in the
area of photos (if you would like to see what we're working on).

Keep boxing and happy hunting :)

I would actually prefer to be way down the list. I enjoy seeing all
the other stamps and reading the log entries. I don't consider
Letterboxing to be a competitive sport. Funhog

Just curious- What part of Virginia are you in? We're in Hampton Roads area and have really only concentrated on boxes in the immediate area - hopefully that will change soon.

Love it! We'll have to design a "first flight" pilot's license for
our new "Their Finest Hour" series. Talk about collector's items!
Someday we'll see them for sale on eBay for outragious figures.

I'd like to weigh in on the whole "first finders"
discussion.... I rushed out today to find a letterbox
in Suffield, CT to try to be the "first," only to
discover that someone beat me to it! I personally
don't understand why both attitudes can't exist
simultaneously - for those of us who like the
challenge and competition of trying to be the first to
find a box, certificates sound like a great idea.
Perhaps we could add a tag to our signatures that
identifies how many times we were first?

Meanwhile, for those of you who see letterboxing
should be a completely non-competitive activity,
simply skip the first page of the log when reading
through prior entries! If you don't care whether you
are first or fifty first, that's great - but in that
case, if it is to be completely non-competitive,
what's the point of keeping count of how many you've
found? Is that really that much different from trying
to be first to a box?

In my opinion, the flexibility to participate at
whatever level you choose is what makes letterboxing
so much fun. It's an interesting and fun discussion
to have, but also rather unnecessary.

That sounds great! I'm in Virginia (northern area) and would love seeing stuff like that
out there. It just adds a bit more fun to the find. : )

Glad to hear that you're in the Hampton Roads area, so are we ;)
There are a lot of great boxes here (hopefully people think that
about our boxes) and we look forward to seeing your stamps soon. Who
knows maybe we'll meet up on the trail and exchange stamps.
